It's last Friday, 8/8, and I get an email from one of the producers of the Mike & Juliet show. They are trying to reach Morgan, my partner because they want to get her on the show for a segment about being pregnant and abandoned, doing it alone. The show is scheduled for the next Tuesday, 8/12. Morgan doesn't get back from England until that evening I tell the producer. The producer asks if I would like to be on the show, if I had a similar experience. I told her I was pretty much alone during my pregnancy and a bit about my story. I also ask her if I can think about it, you see, I have some serious stage fright. Thinking about going on TV to tell a sob story is not exactly my idea of fun, but if it means I can share about iHeart, then it's definitely something to seriously consider! This community is so important to me, it's my passion and I hope that it helps bring some sense of solace for other single parents out there, that's the goal. Morgan and I really want to help shift and change the stigma associated with being a single parent. The producer said that I would be able to mention iHeart, so I said I would do it, after getting the blessing from my partner, Morgan.
I was to fly out, with my son, on Monday and do the "taping" to tell my story. Well, it turned out that they found another single mom to tell her story, which worked out perfectly because this meant I could focus on talking about iHeart (albiet only for a couple minutes, but hey, who else gets this kind of opportunity?).
Colby and I flew to NYC Monday, a five hour flight, which was delayed an hour, so it turned into six hours. He did awesome on the trip for a two year old! NYC is amazing! We got picked up by a towncar and taken to downtown Manhattan. The hotel we stayed at, Hotel Mela, was beautiful. It was right on Times Square!

That night we walked over to Bubba Gump on Times Square, across from the MTV building. We had a window seat with a view of everything, all the lights on Broadway. We had some shrimp a huge strawberry shortcake for dessert.

We were supposed to be picked up at 7:30AM (4:30AM our time) the next day, so we got back and crashed. The next day we got to the studio, located in the FOX building downtown. We were escorted to the "green room" where everyone hangs out before the show. I was super nervous at this point, but when I got there and met everyone, it was a lot less intimidating. They are just nice people! There were guests for the different segments of the show, including extreme weight loss, and dog cloning! I met the other single mom, Tara, and her beautiful little 6 week old Oceana. Tara is a strong woman with a great outlook on life and being a mom.

The producer and I went over the questions that M & J were supposed to ask me. (They didn't ask the questions that the producer and I practiced on at all, but it was good because I was more comfortable winging it, without trying to remember lines) I got to have my hair and make-up professionally done, a first for me! Colby did great through out the whole thing.

As nervous as I was, I tried to remember some advice I got, "pretend it's the dress rehearsal" and from Tara, the other single mom, "remember why I'm doing this," it's not for me, it's for my fellow single moms and dads. It went off without a hitch, and I was so relieved. The producers dubbed the site "The Single Mom's Survival Guide" which is so cool, because I believe that it's true, although it is for single dads as well!
After the show, I found out that I wouldn't be able to download the video. The show had not yet aired on the west coast, so I asked my good friend
Cliff Carlton, author of Single Parent Survival Guide and amazing vlogger, to record the show. (Check out his videos, they're amazing) He said he would!
Colby and I ordered room service and ate breakfast in bed, then took a nap and then spent the remainder of our time at the giant Toys R Us on Times Square, riding the ferris wheel and checking out the lego sculptures! We left for the airport in another towncar (so nice to be chauffeured!) and hopped on the flight home, another 5 hours the very next day. Colby did great again, he made a friend.

What a surreal experience that was! It was sure a whirlwind, I can't believe it was yesterday I was in NYC. I am so happy to see all the new members joining us and my hope is that you will all feel a little bit better about your position in life after being in this community. Thank you all for watching and for being here.
