Unless you've been in hiding this week, you may have noticed a few big events that have happened besides the stimulus plan debate.
In case you missed it, this happened this week. I will TRY to keep my commentary to a minimum but sometimes it seeps out, sorry.
1. Two of Obama's "golden children" aka Sons of the Obama-God, stepped away from cabinet nominations because of tax issues. A third just might be coming -
as Hilda Solis' - nominee for secretary of labor - husband was found to just this week have paid off over $7000 in back taxes he's owed throughout 16 years.
2. President Obama has plans to
have the Census Bureau report directly to the White House, rather than to the Secretary of Commerce as has always been the case. This comes after Latino and Black lawmakers voiced complaints that Judd Gregg - Obama's token Republican nominee for the position - didn't support Clinton's efforts to increase funding for the Census and even at one time supported a proposed plan to abolish the department (hey, if you can beat 'em, lead 'em, right?).
3.
President Obama signed a federally-funded children's healthcare ins.... This is great. How will it be paid for? Well, all of you smokers can plan on spending $1 more per pack because the funding for this is coming from the newly increased tax on cigarettes. Hmm. Can we say morality-driven politics?
4.
Obama created another faith-based office. Bush did this, too. But Obama's "faith" based office is apparently better because it is designed to include all religions. Obama and the 26-year old office leader, Joshua DuBois - a pentecostal minister - are adamant that the new office will not breach the separation of church and state provision. I'm a little confused by the quote "There is no god who condones taking the life of an innocent human being" but I'm sure more news will be related to that later. Or, because Obama is the golden child, there will probably be no coverage at all.
5.
Obama signs an executive order to cap executive pay. Despite what you may see on the news, this cap IS NOT exclusive to bailout recipients. Read about 4/5ths down the page to see Obama's new proposals for long-term compensation reform. Right - because, after all, the White House should ALSO be allowed to tell the private sector how their compensation should be handled...
