I plan on moving to the States (Chicago) next year. Anyone out there who's working full time 9-5 job and has a minor at home? What do you do with them after school. My daughter is 9, so she's too old for daycare. I read about many afterschool programs where they pick up your kid from school and keep them busy and entertained for a couple of hours until you're ready to pick them up. Is this safe? Helllp !!

I live 30 miles SE of downtown Chicago in NW Indiana and our school system has a program called dependent care. They pick up all the after care kids and take them to one of our Elementary schools where they are given a snack and have activities and helped with homework until the parent picks them up. I used it for a couple years and it was very convenient. Depending on where you move here, your school district should offer something like that. Hope you enjoy Chicago, prepare for cold, and wind and more cold here, its not fun here during the winters.

Peace

there should be some sort of after school program within the school district. at least there is in Minnesota. contact your childs school and they should be able to help you out.

Thanks alot guys and gals. I know I'm thinking way ahead... but to be honest, it's the one thing that's worrying me. At 37, I'm really scared of starting all over again.. Wish me luck!

Dubai. Winter here is like the beginning of fall in Chicago. We have heat, heat and more heat 9 months out of 12. I do have some family there in Illinois so my daughter doesn't feel like an Alien when we first get there. That's the main reason I chose the city to be honest. But I'm dreading the whole set up procedure (Finding an apt., job, buying a car, knowing my way around.... etc.) Am I crazy? .. I hope I can keep my cool!

just think positive!! it should be good as long as you have a good support system, and family in town. when is your move? the economy still isnt to great around here but it is getttin better. best of luck. the only reason that I ever stayed in MN is because all of my family is here. I couldnt do anything without their support. I was one who said that as soon as I turn 18 I was out of here!! well now i'm 31 and still dealing with these winters

HI where are you from orign. I moved to Canada once and I have moved to several states.

Most parents do day care. You can have them be picked up via the day care at school. I used to work 9 to 5. Some places have on site after school care in some locales. Check with the districts. Most states have day care referrals for licensed day care providers at home or at center. That means they meet certain safety requirments and submit to background checks required now by most states.

I can hunt donw links for you if you like. Welcome to the US! Shop around for care and prices.

I see you are in Dubai and coming back.

it can be a pain moving a household I did two car loads of stuff and exported my car. I agree with the person in MN i Need one other person for support. my exbt was not that, It is why I want to move to Buffalo if i moved again. to buy a house off. I have a small support system there already. Gotta have one person. I tried to be the lone wolf it does not work out. Support comes in handy when your car breaks down get sick and need a ride to the hospital or back!

Thank you so much for the feedback. I will definately keep it in mind. And like I said, I know I have another year to go, but I thought I'd just snoop around for now for tips and info.

And you missy....the only thing 'wrong' with you, is that you think there's something wrong with you. Knock it off. Leave your self doubt at the door girlie. What's the rush? Just let it roll mama~ xoxo
